Here in PA we had received a beautiful snow in December. My youngest son had prayed for a plowable snow so I heard no complaint when he was told to shovel. I love the excitement of the forecast that calls for a heavy snow. Well I guess I can be excited because I have a boy who shovels! With Christmas, snow, and our oldest son coming home from school in a couple of days, our house was a buzz the day the snow came. That night we sat all warm and cozy with the Christmas lights shining, we could hear the ice hitting the window. I couldn’t help but thank the Lord for a warm home and for my family being safely off the roads. Not everyone was able to be in a warm home. Not everyone that day made it home safely. How many people had homes that were not sanctuaries from the storm? Next morning the sun was up and the digging out began. My poor chickens are NOT fans of snow. They wouldn’t even step out of the chicken run. The snow had arrived Wednesday and by Saturday when our boy came home the ground was still covered. My chickens were still reluctant to come out. We had cleared the snow a little for them. We left the coop door open, and it was time for us to go sledding! We arrived back at the house close to dark. My husband had come home early so when we arrived he told me one of my hens was in the garden. I guess she had flown in, but she couldn’t fly out. The boys and I quickly went to rescue her. There she was standing in the snow all puffed up, which is a sign she was cold. I went to her and picked her up. She didn’t squawk or fight. I opened up my coat and put her close to me. I had a nice sweater on but that didn’t matter to me. She had been so close to the coop she could have seen her sisters go in; close enough to hear them “talk” to one another on the roost; close but left out trapped by her own actions. Had my honey not seen her she would have frozen to death. How many people were close to the Baby Immanuel “God With Us” on that first Christmas? How many people watched the Wise Men travel to find the King of the Jews? How many people were so close but missed the significance of that night? How many sit in church pews and never meet the Savior? You may be reading this feeling like that little hen - abandoned and alone. The Heavenly Father wants to comfort you. You are important to Him. On 12-20-20 Pastor Starr preached “Don’t Miss Christmas”. Christmas may be over for another year, but you can accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and never miss another Christmas.
