The fate of those who only PRETEND to submit to God is indeed dire and it endures forever; but the most biting aspect of this passage is the simple truth that if we only pretend to submit, we are, in fact, haters of God. Jesus once told a parable about 2 brothers. They were both asked by their father to do something, the first said yes and didn’t do it; the second said no, but later regretted his refusal and did what he was asked… Jesus told this parable to the chief priests and rulers of the people of God and summed up His parable with this stunning indictment - "Assuredly I say to you that tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you…" (Matthew 21:28-32). His point was that all of the religious pretense in the world will never make anyone righteous. It is not nearly enough to give lip service to obedience, it is not enough to go through the outer motions and think that you are clean in the sight of a Holy God. No, the fact of the matter is that God looks on the inward parts, He cares more about what's going on in our hearts than what's happening with our hands. Don’t misunderstand, this is no license to sin, rather it is a command for us to cleanse the inside by the blood of Jesus and then the outside will be cleansed as that newness works its way through us. It is to say that merely telling God, "OK, you win" and then go merrily on in your rebellion means that you have NOT repented and have no real assurance of heaven. God calls us to LISTEN to Him and to WALK in His ways, but He calls us to do it in truth, not in pretense. Oh, my beloved! Cease from sin this day and turn unto the God who loves you, He will fight your battles, He has already defeated sin and crushed the one true enemy of your souls, and He offers to you the triumphant life purchased by His precious blood! Fly to Him, and find rest for your soul!!
