The Breath of God

A foundation of the Christian faith is the belief that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant and infallible word of God Almighty. A revelation from God to mankind showing us His love, character, compassion, mercy, desires, demands, justness, plans, purposes, authority, creativity, and a host of other traits and historical facts.

2 Timothy 3:16 states: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” NASB

I’d like to focus on the word inspired. How is Scripture inspired? This word indicates that it “took in” or “breathed in” from God Himself. This is relatable to how we breathe in or inhale air which feeds our body oxygen so we stay alive. There is a taking in and absorption of life-sustaining substance.

In Genesis 2:7 we read, “Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” NASB

In this unique event God exhaled His divine breath and filled the lungs of the first human with life. God breathed into him. This is all God’s work; Adam just laid there lifeless beforehand (compare Eph 2:4-8). God’s exhalation gave life to mankind, the beings He made in His own image.

Scripture is likewise breathed out by God (the ESV uses this phrase in 2 Tim 3:16). Is God not perfect (Matt 5:48)? Is His Word not enduring forever (Matt 24:35)? The men who penned the books of the Bible were divinely inspired by God’s perfect exhalation. They were compelled to write the things God breathed into their hearts and minds; this was not of their own will or accord (2 Peter 1:20-21). Scripture, therefore, in its original text and language, is perfect and inerrant, just as its Author.

As I ponder this, I continue to be astounded at the beauty, elegance, and indescribably complex weaving of Scripture over thousands of years and through dozens of inspired human hands. I cannot help but be filled with awe, wonder, and praise for our Mighty Lord. His power is never-ending, His reach is from one end of the universe to the other, and His breath gives and sustains our very life and salvation. Hallelujah, He is worthy of our praise!
