DIVINE PROVIDENCE
“Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel,
and afterward receive me to glory.”
Psalm 73:24

The providence of God in His government of the world is a subject of utmost importance to the believer. By a proper view of divine providence he will see God in the daily activity of his life. Philosophy, so called, and the depravity of the human heart veil the physical laws of nature, and the everyday circumstances of our lives by which God generally conducts His government over us, and hides the Almighty in His own works. On the other hand, truth and Scripture represent all physical laws as having their effect from the agency of Almighty power, and view God as working in His providence as sure and true as He worked and made the world in the works of His creation. Many of God’s people may recognize and accept this doctrine but are prone to overlook it in practice. This deprives them of the blessing which a constant and deep impression of this truth is determined to give.
Do we believe Romans 8:28? Do we put it to practice? “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” Let me give you an illustration from Scripture of the providential work of God. We read that God blessed Abraham and Isaac in reference to the prosperity of their temporal affairs. Yet it was through industry and attention to business, as in the case of other men, that their wealth increased. From this we learn two things. First, let us look to God for everything; and, second, let us ascribe to Him the smallest as well as the greatest of the things that we possess. Let us at the same time expect every blessing from God through His appointed means. There are two extremes that put us to a disadvantage. First we look not to the sufficiency of the divine blessing on which God is pleased to use to procure the necessities and comforts of life. When our Lord would work the miracle of feeding the multitude He chose to use a lad’s lunch. In the second extreme we sometimes fail to thank God in the event of our successes, assuming that we succeed by the power of our own hand. On the other hand, when we fail we overlook the true cause and neglect the proper remedy.
In temporal things, as well as in spiritual, we should seek all things from God through the use of the divinely appointed and supplied means. We have as much need for God in the concerns of this world, as we have with respect to the world to come. “In Him we live, and move, and have our being.” He alone is the Author of every good and perfect gift.
