How Do You Measure Revival?

Or to say it another way: How do you evaluate whether or not revival has occurred?

It would be helpful to first of all have a biblical understanding of revival. Peter is preaching in Acts 3 and he says in vv19-20, “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord…”

Whatever revival is, surely it entails what Peter calls here “times of refreshing…from the presence of the Lord.” Revival is a refreshing, a renewal, and re-awakening of our spiritual lives and desires and heart for the Lord. Notice also this comes from the Lord. He gives revival. He gives life and zeal for His glory. In addition, note that the times of refreshing from the Lord come in response to repentance. Repentance, in turn, results in life-change (turn back) and forgiveness of sins (sins may be blotted out).

So how do you measure revival? It’s not measured by attendance. It’s not measured by the production of the musical portion or the performance of the preaching. It’s not measured by the level of emotion experienced. All of those things have their place. We want to sing our best for the Lord. We want the sermon to be faithful to Scripture. We want to feel the Lord’s presence.

However, revival occurs when repentance is present, lives are changed, sins are forgiven, and the Lord send times of refreshing. What are those times of refreshing? It really comes down to the basics. Are we spending time with Jesus? Are we praying? Are we serving in the church? Are we sharing the gospel? Are we loving one another? Are we pursuing holiness and resisting temptation? If those things begin to increase, then we have experienced revival - we have experienced "times of refreshing!"
