"All I Could Do Was Pray!"

“All I could do was pray!” We’ve all heard these words before. We’ve all spoken these words before. Usually the sentiment behind this statement goes something like this: There was nothing else I could do and nothing else anyone could do for me in this situation. All I could do was pray.

It’s often a very unintentional response, but a common human response. We attempt to handle the issues that arise in our lives with our own means and by our own resources as a first response. If all else fails, we pray. That doesn’t necessarily imply a lack of faith as much as it may indicate a lack of practice of our faith. It’s not as if we don’t believe God is able. If that were the case, we would not eventually get around to praying. Usually we simply need to be reminded by the depletion of our resources that God is never depleted. Prayer should never be our last resort; it should be our “go to” for every situation in life.

James 5:16-18 reads “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.”

Don’t miss James’ point that Elijah was a man with a nature like ours! In other words, his mighty prayers were not answered because he was a mighty man, a mighty prophet of God. His prayers were answered because he prayed and prayed fervently.

Let’s not neglect the privilege of prayer! Pray for God’s will in your life and home. Pray for our revival. Pray for those who are unchurched and unsaved. Pray. Pray mighty prayers, and pray fervent prayers. Pray as those who have been made righteous in Christ. Pray!

In truth - all we can do is pray! God will do the rest.
