CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune – O Little Town of Bethlehem – p. 92)

(Words by Pastor Jim Byrd)

Sing praises to the Son of God, Who down from heaven came;

To save His people from their guilt, From misery and shame.

Down from His heav’nly glory The Savior came to earth;

And angels looked with fear and awe, upon Messiah’s birth.

God in the flesh, the Son of Man, our Prophet, Priest and King;

The Seed of woman came to earth, to save the perishing.

In love and great compassion, the great Redeemer died;

He reconciled us to our God and we are justified.

Christ gave Himself, the ransom price, our debt of sin to pay;

The sword of justice pierced His heart, and guilt was washed away.

O’er sin and death He triumphed, His greatness let us own;

The Savior reigns forevermore upon His sovereign throne.

Bow down and worship Christ the Lord – His wonders gladly tell;

The fullness of the Godhead three, in Christ the Savior dwell.

The only Mediator, on Him our hopes depend;

He is our Savior, God and King, our Advocate and Friend.

In this time of year many of us will be traveling to spend time with our families. Let’s pray for each other, and may the Lord bless us and keep us safe as we conclude the old year and bring in the new.

THE STORY OF JESUS CHRIST

WHO IS JESUS CHRIST? He is “Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, GOD WITH US” (Matt. 1:23). He is fully God and fully man without sin, and He is the salvation of His people who were chosen and given to Him by the Father before the foundation of the world – “thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins” (Matt. 1:21).

WHY DID HE COME INTO THE WORLD? He came into the world as the Surety of His people to substitute Himself in their place and pay their debt to God’s law and justice. He came to establish the only righteousness by which God can be just to justify ungodly sinners – “Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this” (Isa. 9:7).

WHAT DID HE ACCOMPLISH BY HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION? He secured the complete salvation of all His people for whom He lived, died, was buried, and arose. He died because of their sins imputed to Him; they are saved and live forever because of His righteousness imputed to them. They all shall be saved because of what Christ finished on the cross – “For by one offering He hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified” (Heb. 10:14).

WHERE IS HE NOW? He is seated in the heavenlies ever living to make intercession for His people and keep them unto final glory until His return – “Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us” (Rom. 8:33-34). –Pastor Bill Parker

THE CONSOLATION OF ISRAEL

“And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him” (Luke 2:25).

Simeon was an old man who lived in Palestine at the time of Christ’s birth. God’s word describes him as “just and devout waiting for THE CONSOLATION OF ISRAEL.” The Holy Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he would not die until he saw the Christ, the Messiah sent of God to be the Savior of God’s chosen people (spiritual Israel, the church). Simeon knew and understood exactly who the Messiah would be and what the Messiah had come to accomplish. Simeon saw the baby with his physical eyes, but he saw the Lord’s Christ, the Lord our Righteousness, the consolation of Israel, with the eye of faith. This baby would grow into manhood, and in all that He would say and do up to and including His death, He would establish the only ground of peace between God and sinners. Simeon believed God’s promise to save him and bless him with all of salvation based on the merits of Christ — “For mine eyes have seen THY salvation” (Luke 2:30).

Simeon also knew that Christ would be the Redeemer, not of the Jews only, but also of God’s people among the Gentiles — “Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel” (Luke 2:31-32). He knew that God justifies the ungodly based solely upon the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ freely imputed and received by faith. He knew that national heritage, circumcision, and religious efforts must be totally excluded from the ground of salvation. He saw that Christ’s righteousness alone justifies sinners before God and entitles sinners saved by grace to the whole inheritance of grace and glory. This is the consolation, the comfort and peace, of spiritual Israel, all who come to God seeking salvation based on the merits of the obedience and death of Christ.
