"Merciful Justice" L.D. 4/ Psalm 85 and Galations 3
The subject in this Lord's Day is God in the main. We are discussed as we relate to the curse...but the question is does God really have to punish sin? (Blood theology.) And is God really one in ALL His virtues? And though they seem to strive with one another they are all ONE! Very important concepts! Is it right for God to punish the "sinner" if he is unable to keep His commandments? How can He punish us for something we cannot do? Is it not wrong to ask a paraplegic to walk? His justice and mercy may never be separated! We are funneled to the cross here!
We ask this question not to be blasphemous, but to lead us to the right answer which leads us to the cross, knowing full well that God ALWAYS does right. Holiness is dedication and one of the elements that God created in man. God is THE HOLY ONE as we are called to be a Holy people. To be Holy means He is dedicated to Himself and the creature reflects this being dedicated to God as we are made in His image. God ALONE is able to be selfish and perfectly so. We are far from Holy in our sin however. We often tell our children "one more time and you are getting punished..." even though they have already sinned against us and did wrong. We understand when they disobey they must be punished. Yet, with God one cannot sin with impunity. If you touch God you die...that's why sin has consequences in this life even....a foretaste and prelude to what is experienced in hell in the afterlife. Everyone who did not keep the law of God in the Old Testament was cursed and suspended on a tree. They were forsaken!
And yet we are made righteous. And for that which the flesh could NOT do God sent His Son to punish it IN THE FLESH in order for us to be justified! God did NOT compromise (and does NOT) His virtues. You cannot preach a Gospel just of Love without His justice and the cross! How would your child turn out if you never punished or chastened them? Our righteousness was covered in the blood of the lamb and is whey we have assurance of it even BEFORE we ask for forgiveness!!! God satisfies His holiness to Himself when He sends His Son to die on the cross to satisfy. Cursed of God in order that WE could be righteous!!!
God is just but ALSO merciful...and they kiss each other on the cross! His justice which is His holiness and dedication. His mercy which is our redemption ARE THE CROSS!!!
