WHEN OUR SHOOTS ARE TOO

HEAVY FOR OUR ROOTS

BY: Rev. A.J. Ogden

From a tiny acorn an oak tree is born, and begins to put forth shoots of growth. That is fine and it can become a beautiful oak after nourished by God’s good soil beneath and sunshine above.

But if this majestic oak is going to withstand all the storm winds of life, it must develop first a good strong root system. These roots must be large, strong, and able to hold up all the shoots, or growth, of the oak.

If for some reason the tree would develop a sparse or weak root system, the tree may not live long, or may be blown down by some great wind of adversity. So when the shoots or growth is great, and the roots are few and weak, the foundation is inadequate and the whole tree is wasted!

Many men and women soar to quick prosperity in life only to learn they built their businesses on a weak or wrong foundation. If the foundation we build on is not Christ, the Rock, we have built on sinking sand! David was inspired to write in Psalm 1:3, “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

David said we could be sort of like a tree reaching down its roots into wet, rich soil by the river side, soaking up all the life giving nourishment of God’s Word. He was really saying what Matthew 6:33 tells us. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Do not even try to sprout up shoots until you have roots down deeply grounded in the Word of God. If you are not saved, today is the day and now is the accepted time. Tomorrow could be too late!
