The Word of God in the Age of Legal Marijuana
Believers nationwide look to current and former leaders of religious institutions like Ms. Taylor for guidance on basic ethical questions. When it comes to marijuana legalization, a major change has occurred under their watch. And it has sparked intense introspection for some faith leaders. They are weighing the damage the drug can do against the number of people, especially people of color, sent to prison because of it, and the benefits it can provide those in physical pain.

Polls suggest that public tolerance of the drug has gone mainstream, even in religious communities. A September survey by the Pew Research Center found that 67% of the 2,480 Americans asked spoke in favor of legalizing cannabis, up from 31% in 2000. The survey found a majority in favor among several religious denominations. Even evangelicals polled slightly in favor, with 50% saying yes and 49% no. ...

Yes, because prohibition worked well. Give them an inch and they take a mile.. That's how you go from one extreme of banning this to the other extreme of banning that. Again, unbiblical power and authority.

Correction. *Civilized* government is necessary to the existence of a civilized society.

The duty of elected government is:

"the political direction and control exercised over the actions of the members, citizens, or inhabitants of communities, societies, and states; direction of the affairs of a state, community, etc.; political administration:
Government is necessary to the existence of civilized society." (

The LORD's statement on this is....
Rom 12:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good" (Word of God)

We would expect the elected Government to seek the best available advice and apply that to all people under their jurisdiction.

Politicians are never likely to be perfect - BUT neither are the people.

I don't see where it's the biblical duty of government to control what a person chooses to indulge in. Legalize it as it should have never been illegal to start with. If a crime is committed than go after the perpetrator. The war on drug is a losing battle that causes prisons to be overwhelmed. *I don't smoke it nor endorse smoking it. Just saying, the government isn't our parent and shouldn't treat us as children. We went from making weed illegal to making raw milk illegal.

Guidance should never come from fallible men and women but from the infallible Word of God.

Rev 9:21 JMNT Also, they did not change their mind (attitude and way of thinking) from out of their murders, nor from out of their employment of drugs (or: sorceries; enchantments), nor from out of her prostitutions (fornications), nor from out of their thefts.

Interesting question and proposed issues --

Does breaking the law which incurs jail time matter? What if it fills users with some otger spirit other than that of the True and Living God? What if it increases all sorts of public health and public safety, especially traffic safety, problems? Is that a problem? Not if it's pot.

Let's draw a parallel - opium. Opiates remain an important pain killer, but their use is highly controlled. Would we be making these kinds of debates about the legalization of opiates? I certainly hope not!

Marijuana *might* be a source material for beneficial drugs. I'm sure there are those who would say it's more natural so it's safer. So is arsenic. Not every plant that grows in the field is good for food post-Fall. There are thorns of many kinds.
