'Persecuted even after death': China bans Christians from holding religious funerals
Christians across China are prohibited from holding religious funerals for their deceased loved ones as the Communist Party continues to tighten its grip on the regulation of religion and religious activity.

Bitter Winter, a magazine documenting human rights and religious freedom abuses in China, reported that authorities throughout the country are enforcing policies that prohibit religious customs and rituals to be used during funerals.

In December, the government of Wenzhou city’s Pingyang county in the eastern province of Zhejiang adopted the Regulations on Centralized Funeral Arrangement. ...

Talking about proselytizing Douglas. I came across this little news item.

Quote;
"Faith-based charities working with survivors of modern slavery should adopt a standard on freedom of belief, religion and thought, a new report has recommended.

A three-year research project led by the University of Sheffield looking at Christian charities found that several anti-modern slavery organizations could identify instances where clients felt they had been encouraged by other charities to attend church, read Christian materials or pray.

However, the experts found the overall picture was that religion is not promoted by faith-based organizations offering services to suspected "victims of modern slavery" and these anecdotes were typically associated with the same few organizations.

Some religious charities were found to have very strong positions on non-proselytization, but the report recommends all organizations—faith-based and secular—openly state that promoting religion should not be part of a support environment for people exiting exploitation."

As I watched the latest NHK Newsline program online, I pondered how this is like the Roman Empire, and how Christians then went to the aid of those who were dying. Maybe churches here can organize Mission Trips of their Elderly to go assist the sick and dying in that new hospital in Wuhan Province. They could proselytize them while they are serving.

"Learn how little cause we have then to be discontented at outward trials and troubles! What! Discontented at that which shall do us good! All things shall work for good. There are no sins God's people are more subject to, than unbelief and impatience. They are ready either to faint through unbelief, or to fret through impatience. When men fly out against God by discontent and impatience, it is a sign they do not believe this text. Discontent is an ungrateful sin, because we have more mercies than afflictions; and it is an irrational sin, because afflictions work for good. Discontent is a sin which puts us upon sin. "Fret not yourself to do evil" (Psalm 37:8). He who frets will be ready to do evil: fretting Jonah was sinning Jonah (Jonah 4:9). The devil blows the coals of passion and discontent, and then warms himself at the fire. Oh, let us not nourish this angry viper in our bosom! Let this text produce patience, "All things work for good to those who love God" (Romans 8:28)."
(Thomas Watson; 'All Things for Good)

I worked for a couple of years in Spain in the late 1980’s. Only 10 years previously, the ultra Catholic dictatorship of General Franco had only just ceased, and the newly restored young king, Juan Carlos II, had handed the state over to a new democracy.

Under General Franco, from his victory in the Spanish Civil War in 1939 until his death in 1975, Evangelicals were persecuted, Protestant Bibles banned and burned, evangelical schools forbidden, (evangelical children had compulsory Catholic RE at school), and evangelical churches had to be located on back streets with no sign board. Evangelical marriages were not recognised, (only Catholic marriages took place in Franco’s time, no civil marriage), and evangelicals were to be buried without ceremony in a section of the graveyard reserved for atheists and criminals.

By the way, John UK and Adriel, I know of very good solid Reformed churches, including the unaccompanied psalms only type, that hold very biblical funeral services, and the gospel is solidly preached at them!!!

Behold, He is coming amid the clouds,
and every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him.
All the peoples of the earth will lament him.
Yes. Amen. (Revelation 1:7)

Blessed are they who mourn now for they shall be comforted (Matthew 5:4). The time is coming when all the tribes of the earth will mourn and wail and lament. No human power will be able to stop that.

When we observe the Lord's Supper in the partaking of the bread and wine and "do this in remembrance of Me", we proclaim the LORD'S death.

"For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes." (1 Corinthians 11:26)

When we mourn and lament and have funerals for Christians, we mourn a member of the Body of Christ.

"WHEN any person departeth this life, let the dead body, upon the day of burial, be decently attended from the house to the place appointed for publick burial, and there immediately interred, without any ceremony.
And because the custom of kneeling down, and praying by or towards the dead corpse, and other such usages, in the place where it lies before it be carried to burial, are superstitious; and for that praying, reading, and singing, both in going to and at the grave, have been grossly abused, are no way beneficial to the dead, and have proved many ways hurtful to the living; therefore let all such things be laid aside."
How refreshing!

There are many other things to be "laid aside". Go for it!

Cultural Revolution 2.0.

Check out griefshare.org. I don't often disagree with the Westminster Divines, but even the Lord Jesus wept when He approached the grave of Lazarus.
