Rachel Denhollander: I was also abused in my own church.
still remember it like it was yesterday.

The church was small, just a few hundred people, and everyone knew everyone. My mom played flute and sang on occasion. I earned a reputation early on for loving children, and I frequently cuddled babies for tired moms after the service or played with their toddlers in the nursery during business meetings. Our family was part of a tightknit, small group Bible study that was a highlight of every week, and my parents had been close friends with many of the people there long before I had been born. I’d been born alongside their children, and we had grown up together. The church, which was Baptist in theology but independent from any denomination, was part of our family, and we were part of it. ...

Single Elder/Pastor Led

...most authority based churches are, in essence, single pastor led. Read the rationale as presented on Theopedia.

Paige Patterson argues that, despite biblical evidence undeniably exists in support of a plurality of elders, several factors support the ascendancy of a principal elder as the singular leader of the congregation. Those factors include:

1) the general pattern in the Old and New Testaments (e.g. Moses, the judges, Peter, James the brother of Jesus);
2) the pattern of the early church (e.g. John Chrysostom in Antioch and at Saint Sophia's in Constantinople, Augustine in Hippo, Jonathan Edwards in Northampton);
3) influence of the synagogue on the church, including adoption by the church of the "president of the synagogue" in the form of the "pastor/elder/overseer"; and
4) the psychology of human leadership. ( Who Runs the Church, pp. 150-52)

There seems to be some understanding that such governance will lead to autocracy....

Chris GP many IFBs have a full set of Elders, the problem is they are supposed to do what the pastor says and not what the Bible says--all too often! This is a serious problem. (Who Should Run the Church? A Case for the Plurality of Elders)

This is an excellent article

The problem, I understand with many IFB churches, is that they do not have a plurality of elders. They have a pastor, assistant pastors (in the case of larger churches), who presumably are the elder/s, and a board of deacons that sort of double up as elders without the title.

This is not good. The pastor/s should be clearly accountable to a group of local elders who function as such, and the deacons who are essentially in charge of the practical aspects of the church should be separate.

True, but any church polity afraid to hold leadership to account will end up in the same place. Look at the RCC, for example. It's the human element, not the organization, that counts.

Problem in many IFB’s is a unbiblical definition of Pastoral authority that invokes a group running point hiding things.

Purposely Isolated churches with a viewpoint that once a is hired pastor, he will always be the pastor, brings great problems. I’ve said it before; I joined a church, passed a criminal background check, was assigned a mentor partner. A rich matrion brings in her nephew, puts him in our children’s Sunday school classroom and says, My nephew wants to help, so please allow him to help out “- he didn’t go through a background check- turned out he was a registered sex offender. Sometimes, depending on someone’s checking account to pay the bills, has a price tag.

IHCC had at least one pastor who tried to work with his conviction and incarceration.

One should realize this does happen and even at IFBs, This particular problem was taking care of by law enforcement quite promptly--when it came to light. wrote:
Former Choir Director Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault

Associated Press, carried in KPTM
March 18, 2008

[the previous address is no longer good, but this one still works. ]

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A 28-year-old former Lincoln choir director has pleaded guilty to sexual assault and child abuse.

Benjamin Truska is a former Lincoln Public Schools employee and had been the choir director for Indian Hills Community Church when he was fired in 2005 for looking at pornography on his church computer.

He was charged last fall with two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child and two counts of sexual assault of a child. Police say he assaulted at least four boys between 1996 and 2006 at the church and elsewhere.

He pleaded guilty Monday in Lancaster County District Court to amended charges of 1 count of first-degree sexual assault and 1 of felony child abuse.

Truska is scheduled to be sentenced June 12.
