Alabama abortion ban: Nation’s strictest abortion bill passes; no rape, incest exceptions
After several hours of contentious debate, the Alabama Senate on Tuesday night voted 25-6 to pass what many say will be the strictest abortion ban in the nation. The bill makes abortion a felony in Alabama. A similar measure already passed the Republican-controlled House but controversy erupted last week in the Senate after an attempt to add amendments that would allow exceptions for victims of rape or incest. Another attempt to add rape and incest exceptions on Tuesday also failed and led to a filibuster attempt. Proponents of the measure pushed for a “clean bill” without amendments in order to clear the way to a legal fight in the U.S. Supreme Court and a review of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion. The bill now goes to Gov. Kay Ivey, who will decide whether to sign it into law. ...

While not specifcially commenting on the Alabama law, Trump appears to come out against the lack of exceptions that have caused some conservatives, like televangelist Pat Robertson, criticize the measure as going "too far."...

Donald Trump has been remarkably consistent with the above you points. I believe he has held that position since his election.

To be pro-life, the legislators of Alabama would have had to make provisions to pay for the medical and other expenses of mothers who have suffered from rape and incest. I haven't seen them or any other GOP legislators the other states, coming out to do this. I think some compassion is demanded in these particular circumstances!

Jim, your comparing abortion and alcohol is a non sequitur when it comes to prohibition. Procreation is the natural order of life. It is unnatural to artificially interrupt a pregnancy. Now it may be prudent to do so if you want to get rid of mosquito larvae or some other infestation. We are not vermin and are not manufactured.

My Goodness, Jim you are talking about people, your natural brothers and sisters; even yourself. Don't you value your life and the life of others? God does.

"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them."
(Eph 2:10)

"But if Thy brother is grieved with Thy food, now walk Thou no longer according to love. Destroy not him with Thy food, for whom Christ died."
(Rom 14:15) (the sense here is selfishness and pursuit of personal pleasure at the expense of someone else's life)

Oh, and you may have forgotten that our Constitution and Bill of Rights does not support the rights of the majority but of the minority. And there is no such thing as abortion in "moderation."

Jim, you are a very ignorant fellow if you believe that the anti-abortion crowd are in the majority in Alabama. And even if they were who is our source of authority? God or man? And are you really comparing the murder of the unborn to alcohol?! Abortion is the most evil form of murder. You need to repent before God. You are blind in your sin.

Why do you do that QC on this particular topic? All I was doing was wondering how the prohibition on abortion may match the prohibition of alcohol? It may or may not match it. It may have much of the same fate, since even the majority of Americans support abortion--especially in the last limited sense then the bill that just was passed and signed into law in Alabama. So limiting abortion is probably less popular with the majority of people then even trying to control alcohol intake?

This may be a similar problem in alienating people who would also support some anti-abortion moves but are turned off by Fundamentalists' actions.

Prohibition Comes to an End

The high price of bootleg liquor meant that the nation’s working class and poor were far more restricted during Prohibition than middle or upper class Americans. Even as costs for law enforcement, jails and prisons spiraled upward, support for Prohibition was waning by the end of the 1920s. In addition, fundamentalist and nativist forces had gained more control over the temperance movement, alienating its more moderate members....

Prohibition has an interesting history.

9. Drinking decreased during Prohibition.

The “Roaring Twenties” and the Prohibition era are often associated with unchecked use and abuse of alcohol, yet the statistics tell a different tale. According to a study conducted by M.I.T. and Boston University economists in the early 1990s, alcohol consumption actually fell by as much as 70 percent during the early years of the “noble experiment.” The levels jumped significantly in the late-1920s as support for the law waned, but they remained 30 percent lower than their pre-Prohibition levels for several years after the passage of the 21st Amendment.

10. It continues in some parts of the country to this day.

Even after the repeal of Prohibition, some states maintained a ban on alcohol within their own borders. Kansas and Oklahoma remained dry until 1948 and 1959, respectively, and Mississippi remained alcohol free until 1966—a full 33 years after the passage of the 21st Amendment. To this day, 10 states still contain counties where alcohol sales are prohibited outright.
