The Irony of Refusing to Swear in on the Bible

Last week, the first openly bisexual senator was sworn in…and she refused to be sworn in on the Holy Bible, as is customary. She instead opted for a law book with the Arizona Constitution and the U.S. Constitution, because, she says, of her “love for the Constitution.”

Senator Kyrsten Sinema has a first name that ironically means, in Latin, “Follower of Christ.” In addition to being openly bisexual, she is also listed, according to the Pew Research Center for Religion and Public Life, as the “only member of the Senate who does not identify as a member of a religion.”

Why do we have this system of swearing in public officials in the first place? And swearing in on the Bible? And saying, “So help me, God.”---which, by the way she did (indirectly, at least)? Who cares about such “antiquated” customs? Do these symbols matter? Well, Senator Sinema has a role in our government, thanks in part to the ...

Didn't witnesses in court have to swear in, with their right hand raised, left hand on the Bible? "I swear to tell the truth, nothing but the truth, so help me God" at least that's the way it went on early Perry Mason episodes.

It was the fault of Christians in Arizona who refused to vote that Sinema was elected and not the Republican candidate.

Prov 12:22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD:

Prov 19:9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

Psalm 101:7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

Col 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Prov 12:19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment. 20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellers of peace is joy.

1John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him

Eph 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

The whole idea is that we swear in to a law and higher power in which our law is made. God’s law is above our law, so we swear in, in the presence of Gods law. To swear in by the constitution is a circular argument. She is swearing by the very document she says to uphold? So what happens if the constitution changes? Exactly, God’s law does not change.

The Quakers’ opposition to oaths was based on a plain reading of Matthew 5:33-37, in which Jesus said “Swear not at all...But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.” (KJV) Early Americans assumed that requiring an oath for legislators or participants in court cases would help guarantee honesty and integrity, but those requirements functionally banned Quakers from accessing some of the most basic institutions of government.

By the eighteenth century, many American colonies had begun to enact exemptions for Quakers so they would not have to swear oaths. Typically this involved allowing objectors to “affirm” that they would tell the truth or do their duty, a compromise which satisfied Quakers’ objections....

The oath of office for many has become a farce. They swear to uphold and defend the Constitution “against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” while they themselves are enemies of the Constitution. Barack H. Obama is a classic example. He swore to uphold and defend the Constitution, and did everything he could to destroy it.
