Rose Mary Sheldon, the head of the history department at the Virginia Military Institute, co-authored the recently released book Operation Messiah: St. Paul, Roman Intelligence and the Birth of Christianity. The book suggests that the Apostle Paul could have been a Roman spy who faked his conversion in order to infiltrate the early Christian church.
