Paul wrote to Timothy that we should pray...for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

That looks like we are not to go about legislating anything--otherwise, the words would be..pray and organize to fight for our rights as Christians.."

And, if we look at the history of the New Testament writers, we see that the Roman Empire was not doing things to help along any morality, though later, I read that they did promote marriage when they saw their own corrupt society falling apart. But I don't think that was from any early-times James Dobson or other 'para-church' ministry promoting marriage.

Thanks, "B." for the Masonic mention. It reminded me of this program being offered at a public library later this month:
American Federation of Human Rights
Saturday, July 22, 2017 - 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

The Masonic Philosophical Society aims to provide an environment of exploration within the framework of Masonic principles and to inspire individuals to become self-aware.

People often do not understand Islam because they read so little of the Koran.
For instance, see 'taqqiya' which allows Muslims to deceive, lie, cheat, and steal if they think it promotes Islam. The 911 attacks killed Muslims in the World Trade Center, but that was OK because the overall goal was to further Islam.
Turkey should not be allowed into NATO.

I think Nancy Pelosi dishonors God by being a Democrat who vote in favor of abortion. I think Nancy Pelosi dishonors God by passing an exemption to the federal minimum wage law for companies in American Samoa, where her husband had millions of dollars of investment (and you too, if you owned Star Kist).

What surprises me is that this situation is not something that just happened. Everyone knew that the British 99-yr lease was going to expire. If they didn't like what was coming, they should have moved out. I do remember the movie star Jackie Chan start promoting his movies to the US market since he knew the End was coming.
Anyone who lives in Hong Kong today should feel lucky they haven't been sent to re-training camps in the Gobi Desert.

Too bad the article criticizes VBS, when Jesus said, '..let the little children come unto me...' despite his expert disciples trying to keep them away.

Of course, the argument for VBS--that it helps evangelize non-churched families who send their kids as a free entertainment--may be faulty at its base, since the church should be reaching out to children anyway (see Jesus quote above).

In urban areas, there are many alternatives at museums, parks, etc that run their own summer camps. In some areas, these programs overlap the VBS, and I have even seen churches run their VBS program at night, to allow the kids who go to those park camps to attend.

This reminds me of that new questionnaire that appeared in doctor's offices, that asked if you have guns in your home, or throw rugs. Later, the guns question was deleted, but the throw rugs one was still there. Who would have thought throw rugs were a serious health threat!
I also heard Delaware passed a law that allows for abortion for all periods; they were afraid President Trump was going to appoint Supreme Court justices that would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Mark does not understand the true nature of a church, but only picks out 2 things--charitable giving and volunteering--that he thinks a church involves. He may even know that most churchgoers are not giving, nor are they volunteering, but he is practicing 'wishful thinking' here.

I have heard that young people are leaving Facebook for other media since the Old People have arrived. I guess they don't want the community where they have to put up with Old People who do not understand their lingo, like LOL means laugh out loud and not lots of love.
And their reaction is typical of the Internet. It tends to prevent community bonding because it allows everyone to pursue their own narrow interests.
(Reminds you of that Old Testament verse, 'and everyone did what was right in their own sight')
Thus, the only community is for those who have those same narrow interests, whether that be collecting blue butterflies or raising pink azaleas.
And that can be a world-wide community, which can be good, but it is not helping you get to know your neighbor, much less 'love your neighbor.'

I think the Puritans tried to legislate Christianity, and you can see what the product is today in New England--very few Christians at all. Their law mandated everyone attend church on Sunday--wouldn't you like that? Their law prohibited any other churches from coming into their jurisdiction to plant new churches; they even persecuted Quakers who slipped in.
And of course, they controlled all business dealings in their area.
The issue of Christians and Government is a long and extended one; someone is probably getting a Ph.D. in this right now, though I wonder who would hire them-a conservative group like Heritage or CATO to provide 'expert analysis' of the subject.
We also have many Christians like the Amish, Mennonites, etc, that have distanced themselves from any govt. involvement. Is that the way you want to live?

I guess when the place closes, he will be saying, see, it was an example of the spiritual battle going on today. It was worth it to have this testimony.
Really? Why not just hand out tracts at major intersections of your own city, Ken?

It's surprising to see SA refer to an article from The New Yorker magazine, which I only look at in doctor's offices for the cartoons, which can be very funny at times. I used to even subscribe to it, for the cartoons and for the articles, which I learned are not cut to fit into one issue. When I was in college they ran a long series on the Shah of Iran which I found very interesting.
This story seems bizarre, even for their liberal readers. To say that Rosicrucians have anything to do with modern liberal thought is too much!
However, knowing liberals can like making strange connections--like saying the beat of a butterfly's wings can set off a typhoon in China--it makes some sense.

Hmmm..is the glass half-full or half-empty? Compare this statistic to the frequently cited one that 90 percent of Americans believe in God (not so often cited is the statistic that 90 percent or more of prisoners in US prisons also say they believe in God).
I wonder if the question was posed--do you 'say grace' in public restaurants--out loud or silently, bowing your head?

It reminds me of the movie, "In Like Flint" starring James Coburn, where telephones were implanted in children's brains upon birth.

Maybe they can reduce its status to that of Puerto Rico, and upgrade P.R.'s status to that of a state. That way, we keep our flag with 50 stars.
No, the real solution is for Illinois to borrow the printing machines at the US Mint to make money to pay off their debts.
Of course, the real problem is with state pensions, and the 'devil is in the details' there. Here's a few questions--how long do you have to work to qualify for a pension? what percentage of your salary do you get? is there a reduction for retiring before 65? how about health insurance for those retiring before age 65? all these answers make a big difference in how much money the pension system has to pay. I've heard Kentucky is facing similar problems from a 'juicy' pension system that has many people retiring in their fifties with more than half their salary in pension.

I wonder how this will affect the car insurance rates that all drivers in those states have to pay. You would think this data just proves that legalized marijuana has impacts on everyone, not just those who use it. But, since it is hard to compare insurance rates for places where you do not live, it is hard to see the direct impact.

this story appears regularly, and it has the same '...applies across all faith traditions studied...' which means Muslims in their mosques, Buddhists in their meditation centers, are getting the same benefit, without quoting any Bible verses. And I wonder if it includes the Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California, who are famed for being healthy and long-lived. Maybe it has to do with not using caffeine, tobacco, pork, etc.

What a coincidence!
I was just going to ask you those same questions!
Don't let me interrupt you!

NeedHim wrote:
Jim what are you doing in your community, sharing with your neighbor, in love, without compromising on Biblical truths, that just one sin, is cosmic high treason against Christ, for He is utterly holy & how unholy we are without being clothed in His royal robe of eternal righteousness?
How do you support local Christians in your area, that reach out to the lost at Abortion clinics?
Spurgeon: Every Christian is either a missionary or an imposter.
