Jim Lincoln wrote: As I said, I found the article from Rabbi, ]]Is abortion in Christianity a mistranslation of Bible? an interesting view, which leads to a cavalier view on any inconvenient pregnancy, but apparently accepted by Jews, and if I remember correctly, our Puritan "fathers." (1) I recommend the book Judaism's Strange Gods by Michael Hoffman. The Rabbi's spiritual glasses are even foggier than those of a Romish priest. At least the latter accepts the Apostles' Creed. (2) The Septuagint was translated by Jews. The men who brought us the NT didn't avoid it. The translators didn't botch the passage about Jesus being born of a virgin. A "young woman" might be the literal translation, but it's hardly a sign. Context is everything. The exodus passage is ambiguous on its face to a 21st century reader. The pre-Christian Jew would understand its implications well. There are other passages in the Bible that suggest that the pre-born are people... passages like Luke 1: 15 (b) " He [John] will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb." Notice, it says he, not it; and, he has the Holy Spirit. |
